Additional Details

An acclaimed illustrator of children’s books and a Caldecott Medal winner for his work on Owl Moon, John Schoenherr had two other careers, one in science fiction illustration. He illustrated Frank Herbert’s classic Dune. Herbert once said Schoenherr was “the only man who has ever visited Dune.” Schoenherr’s third career was as a superb painter of animals. The strong sense of design you see in his children’s books and science fiction carries over into his easel paintings. To Schoenherr, the sweep of snow and the patterns of lichen on rock are as important as the animals themselves.
