You see through A Branding in the Sandhills as if you are looking in on a real roundup moment. Jim Rey conveys all the energy of the “bawling spring calves… being roped and separated from their anxious mothers.” The cowboys know what they have to do, as do the horses, some of whom, in the foreground, seem to be taking advantage of a break in the action. The whole painting is muted and tonal, suggestive of ritual and ceremony. This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin’ Tree on page 339. A copy of the book will accompany this lot
