Additional DetailsAfter purchasing Shorty Shope’s painting The Coming Home Song at a show, Ed Trumble teased that he didn’t like one of the pack horse’s legs. “Harry Jackson,” Trumble writes, “was also at the show that night, and he invited Shorty and me to an early viewing of a… documentary film about Jackson that John Wayne had narrated… When the four of us stopped to view The Coming Home Song, Shorty commented, “Mr. Wayne, the buyer for this painting doesn’t like the looks of this leg…” [Wayne] squinting at the painting, barked, “Aw, tell him to go to hell!” Shorty damn near fainted and pointing to me, he blurted, “Mr. Trumble is the buyer!” This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin' Tree on page 251. A copy of the Leanin’ Tree greeting card that features this art work will accompany this lot.
