Additional Details

Indian artifacts he found beside the Little Miami River in Ohio kindled Fritz White’s interest in the traditions and beliefs of Native Americans. White maintained that this experience allowed him to feel the presence of the past—the saga of the American Indian. As a consequence he studied voraciously and began to sculpt, first in marble, then in bronze. The Leanin’ Tree example of Hunter in the Night Sky (CAA Gold Medal, 1999) has a unique black marble base, fashioned by the artist, with the seven stars of the Big Dipper inset in bronze. This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin’ Tree on page 363 A copy of the book will accompany this lot
