Additional Details

Fred Harman may be best known for having first failed to make a go of an animated cartoon company he founded with a guy named Walt Disney (Walt moved to Los Angeles afterward). But Harman found his own success with the Red Ryder and Little Beaver comic strips he drew until 1962. Befriending and sketching the Ute, Apache, Navajo and Paiute Indians he lived among as a cowboy. Harman’s upright cowboy inspired Daisy’s Red Ryder BB Gun, made famous as the gift Ralphie covets in the classic holiday film, A Christmas Story.
