Additional DetailsBill Hughes’s monumental Western landscapes evoke a feeling as much as they describe a place. Working in the Hudson River School tradition as it was transplanted to and transformed by the vistas of the American West—consider Albert Bierstadt, Frederic Church, Thomas Moran, and Thomas Hill, for example—Hughes finds the spirituality in his highly detailed, realistic depictions of places that are, often in large measure, imaginative. Humans and animals moving through and at one with panoramas of bold light splashing on and edging even bolder colors wrought into trees, mountains, rocks, water—these, it seems, constituted Bill Hughes’s artistic aims.
