Additional DetailsBorn in 1919 in the Texas Panhandle, Bill Chappell knew the hardships of the hardscrabble life of the ranch hand, living with his parents in a dirt dugout for a time. But even as a boy, Chappell’s hands turned to art. He painted, sculpted, worked leather, wood, and silver. After serving in World War II, Chappell opened a saddle shop and moved to Colorado. In 1965, he made art his full-time pursuit. This lot is illustrated in The Story of Leanin’ Tree on page 298.
